His first major film role was as the title character in My Beautiful Laundrette (1985).

He has also starred in such films as The Last of the Mohicans (1992), The Crucible (1996) and Gangs of New York (2002).

He has received numerous awards and nominations throughout his career, including five BAFTA Awards and five Golden Globe Awards in addition to his three Oscars.

He is widely considered to be one of the greatest actors of his generation.
